WWEM 2014 - Smart Water Forum

Hosted by Oliver Grievson -Group Manager of Water Industry Process Automation & Control

Session 1 - Thursday - 6th November

9:00 - 11:00 - UKWIR Dissemination Workshop

This workshop will see the dissemination of the results of a UKWIR study to an open forum for the first time ever. This particular workshop is a result of a UKWIR study that looked at the needs for Instrumentation, process automation, modelling and control within the Wastewater Industry and what the future holds for the Water & Sewerage Companies, Suppliers, Academia and everyone else involved in the Wastewater Industry.

The workshop will be co-hosted by Gordon Wheale of UKWIR and the main presentations will be by SKM Enviros who conducted the study on UKWIRs behalf.

Session 2 - Thursday - 6th November

11:15 - 12:30 - Smart Water Forum Part I

The Smart Water forum will begin with the host, Oliver Grievson, of the Water Industry Process Automation & Control group taking some of the themes from the UKWIR dissemination workshop and discussing them further including the resistance to the effective use of instrumentation and what the needs of the industry are in terms of data & information. Laurie Reynolds of Aquamatix will continue this theme and look at the place of the "Internet of Things" within the Water Industry and the session will finish with James Dunning of Syrinix discussing the uses on instrumentation in Smart Networks

11:15 - 11:40 - Introduction and Instrumentation and data within the modern industry.

Oliver Grievson will discuss what the Water Industry envisages as Smart, the use of instrumentation and the resistance to using it effectively and finally the use of data, whether the industry needs Big Data, Small Information or even a little bit of both

11:40 - 12:05 - The Internet of Things

Laurie Reynolds of Aquamatix will discuss the phenomenon of the Internet of Things within the Water Industry and its benefits and risks to its use in the wider industry

12:05 - 12:30 - Pressure transients - case studies in detection, tracking and mitigation

James Dunning of Syrinix will discuss the use of instrumentation in the detection, tracking and mitigation of pressure transients in the potable water network giving practical examples of where instrumentation has been used.

Session 3 - Thursday - 6th November

In the last session of the Smart Water Forum we will see some of the practical aspects of the use of instrumentation in the modern "Smart Water" industry where we will see the experiences of the Suppliers in the use of Big Data and the Internet of Things. The session will start with Martin Müller of Nivus who will present their experiences of using the Internet of Things within the Water Industry. Lastly Tony Halker of Intellitect Water will be speaking about the Smart Water4Europe Project which is actively using some of the "Smart" industry concepts

14:00 - 14:25 - Off Grid Measurement Data Communication

Alison Southwood of Nivus will be discussing that the demand for dense measurement data networks in water and wastewater facilities increases rapidly. Rising fees, legal requirements, the monitoring of special structures as well as flood protection measures constantly push the expansion of the necessary measurement points. A big challenge is processing measurement data from regions with poor infrastructure and unavailable energy networks.

Systems for network-independent data logging shall be considered apart from network-powered facilities during selection, planning and operation.

The presentation will highlight the possibilities the network-independent data logging will provide considering the lack of power supply on the measurement point, the risk of vandalism, the transmission of measurement data and the commissioning of the measurement system from a practical perspective.

The conclusion shows an example of the total costs of a measurement system. It quickly becomes clear that a mere comparison of purchasing costs does not represent the real costs over the entire operating period.

14:25 - 14:50 - Smart Water4 Europe

In the final presentation of the day Tony Halker of Intellitect Water discuss the concept that technology is the catalyst for the development of "Smart Water" networks within water company distribution. These networks require management structures and new processes to gain the real benefits that can accrue from varied types of real time data. Tony Halker considers these issues and presents data and experiences from the deployment of Intellisonde in various overseas networks. This looks at the benefits that some users and planners consider can accrue and sets out the involvement of Intellitect Water in the "Smartwater4Europeproject".

14:50 - 15:00 - Smart Water Forum wrap-up

The host of the Smart Water Forum, Oliver Grievson will summarise the findings of the day and bring the Smart Water Forum to a close
